In 2014, Hayley started to focus on Road Cycling. After a serious bike crash nine days before road cycling nationals, and riding with a broken arm on a borrowed bike, she still managed to podium in the time trial and just missed the podium in the road race and criterium. In 2015, Hayley was excited to try multiple day races. She raced cat 4 and raced in the junior categories and gained great experience with the large womens’s field in the Midwest region. She also qualified for the Youth Elite Triathlon Championships in West Chester, OH. Currently, she is in 8th grade and an honor roll student. She is looking forward learning about team strategy and race tactics from her junior and senior teammates.

What inspired you to become a bike racer?

My parents would always take us on bike rides and they would do the weekly mountain bike race in Colorado for fun. They both were bike racers and triathletes at one point, so my sister and I decided we wanted to race too, so we entered a short track mountain bike race and loved it!

Who is an inspiration to you in your life, both on and off the bike?

My Parents inspire me to work, race and play hard. My sister and brother also race, so it is a real team effort to get ready and organized to train and compete. My parents give us 100% to make sure that we have what we need and are prepared day in and out.

Favorite meal when training?

Salmon and artichokes

The best thing about being a bike racer is?

Traveling, finding new places to ride and meeting people from all over the country

What is your biggest accomplishment on the bike?

Finishing 4th in the time trial at the 2014 USA Cycling Championships, I had a broken arm and borrowed a bike to race on.  I was not planning on racing since I had not been able to train for a few weeks, but I talked my parents into it and am glad I did!

Favorite place you’ve raced your bike and why?

Lake Tahoe for the 2015 cycling championships was awesome!  Great roads, fun crit course and fun things to do off the bike as well.

Favorite cross training or off season activity?

Running, swimming, triathlons

Best tip for a new bike racer?

Get a bike that fits and then get it fitted!

What are one or two things that you do daily that are the key to your success?

I try to get at least 9-10 hours of sleep. I also take off the fall from racing to focus on Cross-country running and just swim with my swim team for a mental break.

If you weren’t bike racing what would you be?

Radio DJ or book editor-I love books and music!

What is something that nobody would know about you?

I got a concussion when I was 5 riding my bike.  I lost my memory for 5 hours.  I learned early on how important it is to wear a helmet!

TWENTY16 has an emphasis on education with the initiation of our Junior Scholarship program in 2015. https://teamtwenty16.com/education.htm

Why is continued education important?

Education make a person “well-rounded”. A career after bike racing will be very important, plus school teaches time management and gives social skills for life off the bike.

What does Ridebiker Alliance mean to you?

It means “opportunity”. It will give riders more resources and networking to pursue their goals on bikes.
