Zoe is a homegrown Floridian in her senior year of high school. She had a bike put under her at the age of 11 by her dad and immediately fell in love with it. Not able to do both, she quit her 7 year cheerleading career and took up cycling full time in 2009. In 2011, she went to junior nationals for the first time where she made the podium in the road race and the time trial, and that’s when she decided to get serious. In 2012 she placed 3rd in the 15-16 national time trial. She’s since decided that time trials are her specialty, but also enjoys racing big crits, especially NCC level. She’s been trying her luck as a category 2 racer since 2013 and hopes to find success there and is working to get back on the national podium in 2015.

TWENTY16 has an emphasis on education with the initiation of our Junior Scholarship program in 2015.

Explain why it is important for an athlete to pursue education by going on to college after high school.

As an athlete, I know it’s so easy to think that you don’t need to pursue education very much because you want to rely on your sport as your career. However, there are a lot of uncertainties that come with any sport. If you get injured and can’t perform for a season or if for some reason if you’re not able to sign a contract with a team, how are you going to earn an income for that year? With an education, you’re guaranteed the ability to apply to many good jobs within the range of your degree and there will always be some job out there for you to work and make a living with. If you don’t pursue college, getting employed somewhere with solid pay will be a lot more tough. Plus, collegiate sports are a great starting point for a professional career!
