My name is Hannah Ruth McDade, and I was born on April 9th, 1997 in Scotland. Over the course of 6 years (2000-2006) my family and I moved back and forth between Ireland and Oregon through my dad's work. Finally in the summer of 2006 we moved to Oregon permanently. I started playing soccer in the fall of 2007, and continued to play until 2010. I began riding both road and track for Beaverton Bicycle Club in 2008 and have been riding ever since. Being a part of Twenty16 the past two seasons has been such an incredible experience, and I’m looking forward to another year. Twenty16 has given me so many great opportunities and has done nothing but inspire me to continue riding my bike. The 2015 season is going to be a good one :)

What inspired you to start bike racing?
My Dad got into riding through a family friend who rode. He would get up early in the mornings and watch big races like Roubaix, Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Milan Sanremo ect. It started off when I would occasionally get up in the mornings and watch them with him. He'd show me the race tactics using Lego pieces. Then, I started getting up very frequently to watch races with him. We then decided that I should give cycling a try. Ever since then, I've been riding.
Who is an inspiration to you in your life, both on and off the bike?
Without a doubt, it would have to be my dad. I wouldn't be where I am today without him. He takes me to all my races, and is always cheering me on. If I have a bad race, he always finds a way to look at it in a positive way. He is also a racer, so we kind of just click together. Out of all my siblings, I've spent the most time with him whether it is the hours on a ride, long drives to races, or just more conversations in the house because we're talking about things cycling related. He's my inspiration and motivation to be a better person on and off the bike because I want to make him proud.
Favorite subject in school...?
I’ve taken a lot of classes in school, but I would have to say my favorite so far has been IB Anatomy!
Favorite meal when training?
Before a ride or race I love starting the day off with a bowl steel cut oats, or a protein powder pancake with shredded coconut!
The best thing about racing bikes?
The best thing about being a bike racer would have to be the feeling of accomplishment after a race. I love knowing that I worked my butt off and I gave it all I could. It's also great making my coach, parents, teammates and siblings proud. Another thing is the friendships I’ve made through the sport of cycling!
Favorite place you’ve raced your bike and why?
My all-time favorite was having the opportunity of racing at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in Scotland! What an incredible facility (:
Favorite cross training or off season activity?
With my coach Brian Abers, during the off season we do weights, core and lots of intervals, as well as skills practices and some solid base miles. In the really early part of the off season I really like running.
Best advice to give the student athlete
Communicate with your coach about school work, big projects, and work your training around that! Training is important, but school is even more important.
Favorite things to do off the bike:
- Spend time with family
- Hang out with friends
- Netflix
- Bake
- Music (singing & listening to it)
Top 10 warmup/pre-race songs on your iPod:
Honestly any music gets me pumped! As long as it’s not slow, sad or crazy death metals music (because that scares me…!)
TWENTY16 has an emphasis on education with the initiation of our Junior Scholarship program in 2015.
Explain why it is important for an athlete to pursue education by going on to college after high school.
Sports are fantastic, but education is amazing. Being an athlete is temporary, so it’s so important to have an education!
