What inspired you to become a bike racer?
The UVA Cycling team, its members and its coach, Ruth Stornetta, all helped me develop into the bike racer I am today. They taught me everything – from shifting gears, changing tires, and how to train.
Who is an inspiration to you in your life, both on and off the bike?
My parents. Both of my parents came to the United States with nothing – no English, no family, no money, just a desire to succeed.
If you weren’t bike racing, you would be...?
A lawyer without a bike.
Favorite meal when training?
Coffee. Breakfast. Then more coffee.
The best thing about being a bike racer is?
Traveling and experiencing different cultures all over the world.
Favorite place you’ve raced your bike and why?
My favorite place that I raced was in Jamaica as part of the Tour of Jamaica, a men’s, 5-day stage race. I was a member of the only women’s team that participated. We raced over the entire island and I was able to see and experience places beyond the gates of the all-inclusive resorts.
Favorite cross training or off season activity?
Mountain biking, running and swimming
Best tip for a new bike racer
Bike racing can be a hard sport to break into; don’t be intimidated by how others act or how their cycling outfits are perfectly coordinated. Learn to laugh at your mistakes and learn from them.

TWENTY16 has an emphasis on education with the initiation of our Junior Scholarship program in 2015.
Beyond the fact that a college education is very important, college is the first time for many students to become independent members of a community. Students learn the importance of time management, social etiquette, how to stand out, how to speak up, etc. Skills that acquired in college go well beyond any classroom or boardroom. As a member of a cycling team, the social skills and discipline that you learned and honed in college are as important here as anywhere else.
Many colleges also have great cycling programs. Some colleges even offer scholarships. The racing and camaraderie that I experienced as a member of my collegiate cycling team are some of my fondest memories of my college years.
