Maddy Boutet was born and has lived her entire life in Anchorage, Alaska. Part of an active family, almost her entire childhood was spent outside trying new sports and exploring the Alaskan wilderness. At the age of 12 a friend told her about a local road cycling club, and a month later she competed in her first race. Maddy fell in love with cycling, and, fueled by her natural competitiveness, she began racing as often as possible. Living in Alaska, where the cycling community is primarily recreational, summer break turned into father-daughter bonding time as Maddy and her dad traveled as much as possible to races. Her breakout season came in 2013, where she stood on the podium at nationals for the first time, resulting in the opportunity to join the TWENTY16 junior development team. In 2014, powered for the first time by the support of a team, she enjoyed her best season to date, culminating in the chance to represent team USA at the UCI Road World Championships. With a newfound perspective on both training and racing, Maddy is excited and motivated to make the most of 2015, her last year as a junior.

Best advice to give the student athlete
Stay on top of your schoolwork. Procrastination is the Achilles’ heel of so many students, especially when you’re in the middle of a hard training block. Try to get a little work done every day so you’re not faced with massive assignments that have to be done in a short amount of time.
Favorite things to do off the bike:
1. Adventuring
2. Hiking with my friends
3. Baking
4. Redecorating/reorganizing my room
5. Spending time at my cabin

TWENTY16 has an emphasis on education with the initiation of our Junior Scholarship program in 2015.
I believe that it’s important for all athletes to pursue a higher education so they are prepared for life outside of sports. As unpleasant as it is to think about, there is so much uncertainty in athletics; one bad crash and your entire career can be over. There is life outside of cycling, and everybody have the skills necessary to be a functioning member of society.
